Supporting Young Carers to be kinder to themselves so they can be kinder to others
Caring for people, particularly the elderly has always been my passion. As a child I began helping care for my late nan and have cared for many wonderful people through my role as a care worker, support worker and through my care based businesses. The Young Carer's Club is a scheme that supports young people to be better carers. Whether they are caring as a result of work placements, at home for a relative or for any other reason- our Young Carer's Club focuses on sharing tips, insight, peer support and sign posting to help prevent burn out.

The care role is demanding, and I believe self care equals better care. By supporting each other through a peer network we can share new and creative ways of caring, and provide a caring community of people who understand the struggles and demands that care has, particularly on younger and less experienced individuals.

Every 3rd Wednesday of the month I am now running a session for young carers that focuses on providing a peer support space to help encourage new friendships and a professional learning space to help broaden the skills of young carers, and to help them know of services and support that is available to them locally.

Caring is a hard, but rewarding task. If we look after our young carers, we can help grow a generation of resilient young people who will go on to further inspire people throughout their lives.
